How to fix the Shopify Newsletter Sign Up reCAPTCHA Error

Sometimes when a customer tries to sign up to your Shopify store's newsletter, they may get the following reCAPTCHA validation errors:

  • The sign up will completely stop working without you making any changes to your end.
  • Sometimes the validation will only fail on contact forms.

Here is how you can debug this error to find a solution:

  1. Turn the option off in store preferences. To do this go to Sales Channel -> Preferences -> Spam Protection. You will see that the spam protection is turned on by default.
  2. Test by turning off the spam protection, and then try signing up again for your store's newsletter to check if the form works. It's important to note that this is only a temporary fix - as it keeps the spam validation turned off forever. You need to have this ON - as turning it OFF will lead to more spam.
  3. If the problem persists, it is most likely an error on Shopify's end. This has happened in the past where an issue led to failed reCAPTCHA errors. Shopify does deploy fixes for these issues pretty quickly - so give it a day or two and check back to see if the issue is resolved.
  4. If it persists for more than a few days, the best option is to visit the Shopify help center and create a ticket for your specific store.
